how to install can lights in existing ceiling

I have a front porch that has 3 Can lights in the ceiling which are operated by a switch at the front door and a service door. It's honestly not that bad and makes drilling through the joists sooooo much easier.Installing a Ceiling Fan and Light FixturesĮlectrical Question: I want the fan to work just by a pull-chain but continue to have the switch operate the remaining can lights. It's really not that bad, because you just need to put up some drywall afterwards and mud/spackle it nicely and repaint your ceiling. You're going to have to cut a (in my case) rectangular strip, mine was about a foot wide, all the way down your ceiling to run wire. Unfortunately, there really isn't a genius easy way around this. I reached out to a buddy of mine who did this for a living. Update: Quick update for anyone who cares. It's on the first floor of a two story house.

Quick edit I don't have access from above. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Even those that affirm my current idea as the best or only realistic option.

So I was thinking if I do have to make those holes to cut through the joists and run the wiring, to do it closer to the wall. The ceiling doesn't have too much texture to it, but it does have some of those minor swirl designs in it.

Was hoping maybe someone else has done something like this and has a better idea. Right now my only idea is to make some occasional holes in the ceiling between the joists to drill holes. Like the title says, I am looking for opinions on the best way to wire recessed lighting into an existing ceiling without electrical currently going through it.
